Mentoring as an invisible force

If we want communities to thrive, we need to tap into local systems and networks. That’s how we create more effective, lasting transformation, while reducing dependency on outside actors. If it is this simple, why then, did it not happen already? Good question… there’s an invisible force here. Let’s start recognising it!

TrickleUp pictureTo make the shift to #locally_led development, we need mentoring 👥 and coaching as an integral part of the solution. The behavioural change that comes with the agency, the leadership in communities, flourishes with mentoring. According to this article, “Ninety percent of these multidimensional and time-bound development interventions include mentoring as an essential mechanism to help those left behind build economic opportunities. And the evidence is clear: this type of coaching does make a real difference in economic inclusion efforts…”

When a supportive partner to communities, takes a mentor-like attitude 🪞, communities and their members can (are encouraged to) increase self-efficacy, grow stronger social networks, shifts gender dynamics. Starting within their homes and spreading within their communities. Here’s the oyster in the pearl! The power to believe in yourself, the confidence that you can change not just your life but that of your neighbours too. It needs cheer leaders.

Mentors as trusted allies 🫶. Whether it’s offered one-on-one or in groups, in conversation or through workshops, what really matters is that the mentoring is adapted to the environment, people, and priorities they are given. That it is made locally relevant. It’s not about knowledge transfer, it’s about nurturing change, encouraging positive attitude to do-it-yourself, with each other. Yes, there are apps that can support. But, let’s focus on the system and how-to design the mentoring and coaching with and for communities.
